KKR's Opening Pair Faces Another Disappointing Performance
Kolkata (West Bengal) [India] - April 21: The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) continued their lackluster performance in the Indian Premier League (IPL) during their recent match against the Gujarat Titans (GT) on Monday.
In their chase of 199 runs, opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz, who replaced Quinton de Kock, managed to score only a single run before being dismissed by Mohammed Siraj. Sunil Narine fared slightly better, scoring 17 runs off 13 balls before being caught by Rahul Tewatia off a delivery from Rashid Khan, which included two fours and a six.
Throughout this season, the KKR opening duo has accumulated a mere 152 runs over eight innings, averaging just 19.00, the lowest among all teams. Their run rate of 8.44 is also the second-lowest, only ahead of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). The highest partnership they have achieved so far is 46 runs.
KKR has tried four different openers this season: de Kock (143 runs in seven innings at an average of 23.83 and a strike rate over 137.50, including one fifty), Narine (147 runs in seven innings at an average of 21.00 and a strike rate of 177.10), Gurbaz (one run in one match), and Moeen (five runs in one innings), with disappointing results from all.
In their matches, the opening pair has recorded partnerships of 4 (against Royal Challengers Bengaluru), 41 (against Rajasthan Royals), 1 (against Mumbai Indians), 14 (against Sunrisers Hyderabad), 37 (against Lucknow Super Giants), 46 (against Chennai Super Kings), 7 (against Punjab Kings), and 2 (against Gujarat Titans).
In the match, KKR won the toss and chose to bowl first. A strong 114-run partnership between Sudharsan (52 runs off 36 balls, including six fours and a six) and Gill, who scored 90 runs off 55 balls with 10 fours and three sixes, laid a solid foundation for GT. A subsequent 58-run partnership between Gill and Jos Buttler (41 not out off 23 balls, with eight fours) helped GT reach 198/3 in their 20 overs.
For KKR, Vaibhav Arora, Varun Chakravarthy, and Andre Russell each took one wicket.
GT is now looking to defend their total of 199 runs to secure their sixth victory in the tournament.
